A new crowdfunding campaign for Star Control successor Free Stars: Children Of Infinity has just gone live on Kickstarter.
Described as a "passion project from veterans of Toys for Bob, the original creators of The Ur-Quan Masters and the beloved Free Stars universe," Free Stars: Children Of Infinity is the work of Pistol Shrimp, a studio founded in 2021.
"We are excited to finally share the next chapter in our epic space saga, continuing from a classic game with a massive legacy," adds the company.
In case you weren't aware, The Ur-Quan Masters is a multi-platform, open-source port of the 3DO version of Star Control 2, which comes packed with new features. It was recently reissued as Free Stars: The Ur-Quan Masters for free on Steam.
Here's some PR on the sequel:
Free Stars: Children of Infinity is an action-adventure game inspired by the golden age of science fiction, defined by its hopeful future, wondrous technology, and a grandiose galaxy filled with eclectic stories.
You are the captain of a mission to the farthest reaches of space, where you'll discover thousands of exotic worlds and dozens of alien denizens. Some are friendly, some are terrifying, and some are just plain weird.
It’s up to you to decide how to acquire allies, confront threats, and ultimately protect a universe still recovering from the onslaught of the terrible Ur-Quan overlords.
Pistol Shrimp says "when you purchase a copy of Free Stars: Children of Infinity, you're getting the full game. Now and forever. There are no additional DRM measures, beyond what first parties like Steam require. There are no licenses, microtransactions, or subscriptions. This is not a game as a service, and the multiplayer does not rely on any servers that could disappear in the future. You can play offline or locally on a network with a friend, and you can mod it to do whatever you can imagine. We can make this promise because we rely on no proprietary code except what we author ourselves."
The campaign's initial funding goal of $100,000 has already been surpassed, with more than $185,000 raised at the time of writing, with 30 days remaining.

Eh, I'm not interested in games like this unless they are controller based. There is absolutely no shortage of space games for pc. That's why the 3do version of SCII is so beloved. It does look like a good game though.
I just started replaying Star Control II last night and was wondering if there was anything modern like it. Mystery solved- how's that for timing?
Backed this at the $275 tier without a second thought and I never back gaming Kickstarters anymore. Star Control II is my undisputed favourite game of all-time and while the Stardick developed Star Control: Origins was quite good, I can't wait to play a true sequel from the original creators.
@_NetNomad I haven’t played the series but I came here to ask if the game plays like “Escape Velocity”, because it looks similar and I love that game. Anyway if it is indeed similar, I can recommend “Endless Sky” on Steam. Its completely free
@DestructoDisk thanks for the tip!
I hope they hit the goal for console versions.
@Poodlestargenerica I think the pc version of sc2 is plenty more beloved than the 3do version. The 3do version is cool, but one reason it stands out is cause there aren’t many good games on 3do. That said, I would really prefer to play this on console (and I did play sc1 and 2 on pc!)
@jesse_dylan While it was definitely the only great game for 3do, it was also considered the definitive version by many people for most of the games lifespan. And yeah that is partly because it was a controller based space rpg. Too bad the buy in was 700 bucks.
@Poodlestargenerica did people use 3rd party controllers? I remember the 3do controller being kinda iffy in my limited exposure. You could always try out the free version of sc2 free stars on Steam, based on the 3do version; you can plug in a controller.
Hey, maybe you could use your 3do controller? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaa………
I don't own a 3do, I had good consoles. I just play it on my phone.
@Poodlestargenerica @jesse_dylan
The definitive version of Star Control 2 is the open-source "The Ur-quan Masters" (recently put on Steam for free as well) and has been for decades. It's based on the 3DO code (and includes the 3DO voice acting) but adds some elements from the DOS version, bugfixes, new features, mod support, and runs on modern OSes.
Children of infinity will include controller support for PC and console releases are a stretch goal.
@yttrium13 Definitive edition to people who wanted to play with a controller was 3do, end of story. I'm not saying it's the only or the most inclusive version, but it was a console release, therefore definitive for people who don't like pc gameplay. PC gaming with a controller was iffy at best even ten years ago, much less 20. Only with the deck is it even coming to where it needs to be, and even with that, all I see are whiny steam reviews about how games don't have proper keyboard and mouse support anymore. You can't please everybody.
Glad to hear this will have the support.
