Squaresoft's groundbreaking RPG Final Fantasy VI was released 30 years ago today.
The critically acclaimed title was originally launched for the Super Famicom on April 2nd, 1994 in Japan, and has since gone on to become regarded as one of the finest entries in the long-running fantasy series — in part thanks to its emotional story, gorgeous pixel art, and its beautiful soundtrack from the series regular Nobuo Uematsu.
Notably, it was the first mainline Final Fantasy game to be directed by someone other than the series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi — with Hiroyuki Ito and Yoshinori Kitase stepping into the role — and also featured a more industrial/steampunk setting than the one fans were familiar with.
Its story saw players taking control of a misfit band of warriors and rebels who are thrown together by circumstance. United by a common goal, they must join forces to foil the plans of an evil empire and a villainous mage named Kefka, who is intent on destroying the world using a long-forgotten magic.
North American players had to wait until October of 1994 to experience the game on the SNES for the first time (under the slightly misleading title "Final Fantasy III"). European players, meanwhile, missed out entirely at the time (having to either import it from elsewhere or wait until Tose's 1999 PlayStation port).
Since its original release back in 1994, the game has been reissued across a number of different platforms in various different forms. This includes ports and remasters for the PlayStation (as mentioned above), Game Boy Advance, Android and iOS; as well as the Nintendo Wii (as part of the Virtual console), Nintendo Switch, and PS4.
How did you first experience Final Fantasy VI? We'd love to hear your stories below.

I got my imported copy from a shop in Leeds along with Donkey Kong Country and was supposed to have both the games for Christmas but the reviews were so glowing I started playing Final Fantasy before Christmas hit. It is still my favourite Final Fantasy, and the music still blows me away, especially "Dancing Mad," and the 20 minute long end theme. A full on remake/remaster would be most welcome.
My favorite game of all time, besting thousands of other games.
Final Fantasy 4, 5, and 6 represent a remarkable hat-trick. The kind of talent and vision on display across those three titles borders on supernatural, and decades later it still boggles the mind to see what they accomplished on the hardware.
But if I could only play one of them for the rest of my life, it would be Final Fantasy 6. It's a masterpiece and the series would never again know such heights. (FF9 probably comes the closest, though)
I first played it with a friend the summer before college. Since then, I've played through it several times and in several different forms. Most recently, I enjoyed the Pixel Remaster just a few months ago. I expect I'll continue to revisit it every now and then for the rest of my life.
The last great Final Fantasy game.
I didn't play it until it came to NA had got my copy day one when it was available in NA and still have it.
Happy anniversary. A friend of mine had the game for the SNES when it was current. I wasn't much into RPGs unless they were called Phantasy Star 4, so I just watched a bit of FF6, but I remember it looking very nice. I always remembered that opening scene. I wouldn't play the game until a bunch of years later and it was the GBA version. Honestly, I lost interest in it about halfway through it. But I've decided to revisit it at some point, and to play the SNES version. I think I may be able to appreciate what the game is more now than I could back in the day.
I believe it was one of the earlier 24-megabit games too.
Happy 30th anniversary to the second last truly great FF game (FF9 being the last one imo). Even to this day, this game still holds up.
I got it on snes the day it came out. I feel like I called waldensoftware every day asking if it was out yet!
@mandlecreed just so they don’t turn it into an action game
my parents were always pretty cheap
so i didnt have a snes until i bought one off ebay as well as a copy of ffvi in like 2003. i played pretty far into it but never beat it until i finally dedicated myself last year to getting through it on the snes classic. it’s been my favorite game pretty much since i first played it but i just couldnt get past some of the grinding for the longest time. at some point i’ll also play thru the gba port and the pixel remaster
Never got to own an SNES growing up, with the NES being the last non-handheld Nintendo console I owned until my Switch decades later. Instead, I got to play FF VI on my potato PC back then via emulation, but that didn't make it any less magnificent to play. Still the best FF game in my book, hands down.
I originally bought the PAL PS1 version of FFVI for the Final Fantasy X demo disc that came along with it. Yet FFVI ended up being my favourite RPG on the PS1. And it only cost £10 if my memory is correct.
@mandlecreed
Did you buy it from a small Japanese gaming shop in the Merrion Centre?
@UK_Kev it was on Call Lane, and the shop was up a flight of stairs, the name of the shop escapes me but their adverts were always black print on a yellow background and they had a bee/wasp logo on the ad.
I remember the glowing review in Super Play - got a mark in the high 90s and they were effusive with praise.
However they also pointed out that the cart did not work well with a converter, so I never purchased it.
I recently bought a repo cart copy which is a PAL version and it is in my ‘need to play’ game queue.
